Home away from home

A view of the area where I live (our house is roughly where the arrow is)

Some facts about Danbury - my hometown

The City of Danbury is located in Fairfield County, southwestern Connecticut. The City was settled in 1685, it was named for Danbury, England, and was incorporated in 1702. Once Danbury was an important military depot for the American Revolution, but is now a manufacturing city. Some of the products that are produced include optical equipment, ball bearings, pharmaceuticals, and machinery. Danbury was at one time known for its hat industry which lasted from the 1780’s through the mid 1950’s. Today Danbury has a population of roughly 75,000 people.

New England Map

The map on the left shows the New England area. The arrow approximately indicates where Danbury is. As you can see we are pretty close to New York City but at the same time we are also not far from the heart and beauty of New England.

Danbury History

On April 26, 1777, British troops commanded by Gen. Tryon invaded Danbury to destroy the military supplies stored throughout the village. After a night of drunken looting and rioting, the British forces left Danbury on word of the approaching Continental Army, commanded by the now famous traitor Gen. Bendecit Arnold, who at the time was still on our side. Upon leaving Danbury, the British troops set fire to 19 houses, a church and 22 barns and stores. They retreated to Ridgefield where their 2,000 troops battled 700 from the Continental Army. The British lost 200 men, including 10 officers, while the Americans lost 20, while caputuring 40 Redcoats. American Gen. David Wooster was mortally wounded in the battle. His name adourns everything from streets and shops to the beautiful Wooster cemetary in Danbury where he is buried.
